Courses in this section are provided by the Faculty of Life Sciences
. Only students and staff from the Faculty of Life Sciences will be able to book themselves on to courses using this system. Anyone else who would like to attend a course should email email@example.com
Our skills training programme provides courses intended to help you obtain your postgraduate qualification and to gain broadly transferable skills that will benefit your future career regardless of your final career intentions.
The Roberts Report, which was published a number of years ago, recommended that PhD students have “the provision of at least two weeks’ dedicated training a year, principally in transferable skills, over which the student should be given some control.” In practice, we expect that most students will undertake most of their training in year 1; however, we do expect attendance in each year of research.
We recommend that you record your training activities using the Skills Training and Development section of STaR
, which is based on the Vitae Researcher Development Framework
(RDF). You also have the opportunity to record the seminars, meetings and workshops that you might have attended. At your annual progress review, your panel members will be provided with a list of the courses for which you registered. Please try not to feature on this list as a ‘no-show’ without good cause!
Finally, please help us to understand your training needs by taking the time to complete the questionnaire after each course. The responses that you provide help us to improve courses and to let trainers know when then have done a “good job.”
You should also feel free to provide feedback to your School Postgraduate Rep or Director of Graduate Studies. Suggestions for further course titles or topics are always welcome.
