Virtual Staff Wellbeing Festival - Boosting Academic Wellbeing with Transcendental Meditation
Team Staff Development
Come and find out about the practice of Transcendental Meditation and how it has supported the wellbeing of Gaetano Arena, EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellow. This session will be hosted by Dr Gaetano Arena and Patrice Gladwin.
Gaetano completed in 2019 his PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol and he is now holding an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship where he works on research and development of adaptive composite structures for aerospace application. At the end of his PhD, he struggled with his own mental health, which made him look for potential tools that could help him completing his degree and improve his general health. Gaetano found in the technology of Transcendental Meditation (TM) a powerful and evidence-based tool to boost wellbeing. The benefits he experienced are so remarkable that, on top of his research activities, he has started working in collaboration with the University of Bristol in order to increase awareness about TM. On behalf of the Bristol Transcendental Meditation UoB Society, Gaetano was awarded £2000 from the Alumni Grant Award to spend in wellbeing projects for University students and staff members.
Patrice is the Bristol certified Transcendental Meditation teacher. Patrice studied TM with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (founder of the TM organisation) in 1971-1978 and then spent time working on course development with Maharishi and the international Transcendental Meditation organisation, 1975-1977. “Teaching this beautiful, natural technique in Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Belfast and the for 25 years in Cambridge and 10 in Bristol”, she says, “has been the greatest joy and privilege of my life”. Patrice has taught TM to thousands of people over the years. Her passion is for the use of this knowledge in schools and colleges.
