Course overview

The workshop aims to support managers in conducting 1-1 conversations and annual Staff Review and Development conversations; to ensure that managers have regular conversations with their staff, and adopt a consistent approach to the process; and to refresh/enhance managers' skills and confidence in conducting effective conversations, to make them meaningful, constructive and supportive.

Please note that although this workshop will touch on the MyReview tool, the focus is on enhancing skills in conducting effective staff review and development conversations, in both 1-1s and the annual review, not on the how to navigate the MyReview tool. For guidance and support on using the MyReview tool, please see the MyReview User Guide and FAQs.

What you’ll leave with

  • Feel confident to prepare for and begin a review conversation, and establish a constructive ‘climate’ in the meeting and post-meeting activities.
  • Adopt a range of coaching questions that encourage reflection, self-evaluation, problem-solving and honesty about difficulties and successes.
  • Feel confident in giving feedback effectively so that it is clearly understood and offers something specific to develop.
  • Identify what useful objectives look like to help colleagues craft simple, specific and attainable objectives that provide a genuinely helpful focus in their work.
  • Understand the principles and scope of the SR&D process.

What to do before you attend: Please read the MyReview User Guide and Information for reviewers prior to attending this workshop.

You should also familiarise yourself with the University Strategy, and consider your team’s role in relation to these strategic objectives.

Who this course is aimed at: Staff attending this course must be a current Line Manager of at least one person and be holding Staff Reviews.

What you need to know

Refreshments: Tea and coffee will be provided during the break(s). Please bring your own lunch/snacks. We encourage you to bring your own reusable cup or other container for refreshments (tea, coffee and water).

Cancellation fee: Your Division/Faculty will incur a £50 charge should you fail to attend on the day or cancel your place any later than three full working days before the course.

Sickness: If you are unable to attend the course due to sickness, please can you or a member of your team notify us by email ( as soon as possible on the day of the course, if not before.

Waiting list: Staff Development will operate a waiting list should this course become full. Because of this, places are non-transferable between colleagues.

How you book

Development courses should be discussed as part of a development plan agreed with your manager.

Each course will be open for bookings at 9 am on the day 8 weeks prior to the course date. If this date falls on a University closure day, the course will be released on the next working day.
