Course overview

This workshop is for professional services staff who have responsibility for managing other staff.

This course will support you to have effective and positive conversations with individuals in a management context, both face-to-face and virtually. We will focus on adopting a coaching approach to these conversations and will use a range of practical tools and techniques to develop confidence.

What we will cover

Preparing for Powerful Discussions
· Having the right mindset
· Putting yourself in the other person’s shoes
· Being clear on your outcome (and their possible outcome)
· Preparing your message using a coaching approach

Opening the Conversation & sharing the What and Why
· How to build trust and rapport in opening the conversation
· What and Why?
· How to deliver your message using a coaching style

· Quality questioning to explore what’s going on for others
· How to deal with pushbacks or resistance, including showing empathy

Resolve & Personal Action Planning
· How to ensure your conversations end with positive action
· What specifically are you taking back to work that will help you have Quality Conversations that deliver results?

What to do before you attend: To maximise time in the workshop, there will be some pre-work to complete prior to attending which we will email to you approximately a week before the course.

What you need to know

Cancellation fee: Your Division/Faculty will incur a £50 charge should you fail to attend on the day or cancel your place any later than three full working days before the course.

Sickness: If you are unable to attend the course due to sickness, please can you or a member of your team notify us by email ( as soon as possible on the day of the course, if not before.

Waiting list: Staff Development will operate a waiting list should this course become full. Because of this, places are non-transferable between colleagues.
