Course overview

Money worries can be one of the single biggest causes of stress, impacting mental health and physical health if left unchecked. Therefore, as part of the wider wellbeing provision for staff, Staff Development are offering financial wellbeing courses facilitated by Nick Davies & Richard Ellis, local independent financial planning practitioners. There are 3 different workshops will aim to support staff at different stages of their financial journey, read the “Who this course is aimed at” section to determine the workshop that best suits your current needs.

What we will cover

  • The University of Bristol retirement process – delivered by a member of UoB pensions team
  • How much is Enough?
  • Common challenges/pitfalls and how to avoid them
  • Your State pension
  • Tax and investment planning
  • Wills and power of attorney – delivered by a practicing local Solicitor
  • Inheritance tax considerations
  • Action planning

What to do before you attend: To be prepared for the workshop, it is advisable to know your University employment benefits, including which pension scheme you are member of, have a good handle on your assets, liabilities, income and expenditure (don’t worry, you won’t be asked to share this information during the session)

Who this course is aimed at: This course is designed for those approaching and planning for retirement. Whether you plan to retire gradually, cease working indefinitely or even start a new career, this workshop will help guide you through the options and considerations when employed income will reduce or cease.  

Please note, due to availability and content overlap we recommend that you do not attend more than one of the Financial Wellbeing stages courses within a year.

What you need to know

Location: This course will run online, via Zoom. You will be sent a link 2-3 days before the course date.

Cancellation fee: Your Division/Faculty will incur a £50 charge should you fail to attend on the day or cancel your place any later than three full working days before the course.

Sickness: If you are unable to attend the course due to sickness, please can you or a member of your team notify us by email ( as soon as possible on the day of the course, if not before.

Waiting list: Staff Development will operate a waiting list should this course become full. Because of this, places are non-transferable between colleagues.

How you book

Development courses should be discussed as part of a development plan agreed with your manager.

Each course will be open for bookings at 9 am on the day 8 weeks prior to the course date. If this date falls on a University closure day, the course will be released on the next working day.
