Strategies for Managing Performance
Duration 2 x 2 hour workshops plus 1-2 hours self-directed learning
Team Academic Staff Development

This training is for both academic and professional services staff who have responsibility for managing the performance of other staff. 


This two-session course, which also includes a self-learning element, has been developed in response to remote working, requests for further support in this area, and to provide a consistent approach across the University. Furthermore, it supports the University vision and strategy to nurture excellence and unlock potential.

What we will cover:

·        Why managing performance matters

·        How to create conditions for best performance

·        Frameworks and best practice for use in real life situations

·        How to create an environment where there is clear understanding of what needs to be accomplished

·        Understanding the similarities and differences between academic and professional services staff 

·        What to do when performance is slipping, or doesn't improve

·        Practical tools and real life example case studies - reviewed and discussed in groups enabling shared learning

On completion you will be able to:


·        Manage performance with increased confidence and skill

·        Review what actions to follow up within your own team

·        Understand how to create clarity when setting goal

·        Make use of techniques to turn around situations when performance is slipping

Total time commitment is equivalent to a one day course (2 x 2 hour sessions and 1-2 hours of self-directed learning)
Course charges Cancellation fee: Your Division/Faculty will incur a £50 charge should you fail to attend on the day or cancel your place any later than 3 full working days before the course.

Sickness: If you are unable to attend the course due to sickness, please can you or a member of your team notify us by email ( as soon as possible on the day of the course, if not before. 

Waiting list: Staff Development will operate a waiting list should this course become full, because of this, places are non-transferable between colleagues.
